Standard 1: Purpose and Direction

Standard 1: The school maintains and communicates a purpose and direction that commit to high expectations for learning as well as shared values and beliefs about teaching and learning.

1.1 The mission statement of Stewart Street Elementary School is reflective of the fact that the school maintains and communicates a purpose and direction that commit to high expectations for learning as well as shared values and beliefs about teaching and learning. School improvement is a continuous process utilized at Stewart Street Elementary School to ensure that all students' needs are met. School improvement is the vehicle that drives and builds the professional learning communities that are needed to support the continuous improvement effort within the school. Faculty and staff work cooperatively and collaboratively with students, parents, and the community.

The staff sets high expectations and creates a positive learning environment for students in order to enhance academic performance and promote the development of critical skills. Students are provided a challenging curriculum in a clean, safe, non-threatening, and drug free environment. All students are provided opportunities to receive quality learning with the necessary support to ensure academic acceleration, consistent demonstration of appropriate social behavior, and continuous personal improvement. A highly qualified staff, along with innovative and researched based strategies and the use of modern technology, is a major component in the delivery of instruction. The staff is charged with learning to effectively use data to determine student performance goals and to use research to identify strategies and interventions to achieve these goals. School-wide planning includes all constituencies involved in the school. Subsequently, the quest for tools to improve student learning is sustained throughout the continuous school improvement process. Excellence and a desire to learn are a way of life for the students.

Effective communication with parents and the community foster a partnership among all stakeholders. The inclusion of these stakeholders is evident in the documentation of our communication via websites, student handbook, minutes from various meetings, and the results of surveys.

1.2 The culture is promoted when the school engages in a systematic, inclusive, and comprehensive process to review, revise, and communicate our school's purpose for students' success. Evidence of this is shown through staff and parents taking surveys online to make sure our school strives and pushes for student success. Our school's PTA and or SAC (School Advisory Council) meet regularly to collaborate to achieve the best interests of the school's purpose. We also host parent expos to discuss student success, and what can be done if a student is declining academically. Parent Expos also give teachers and parents a chance to discuss assessments given to students to promote academic achievement. The dates for these meetings are posted on fliers and on the school's marquee to communicate with our stakeholders. Besides having meetings with our parents, we also have faculty meetings and grade group meetings to make sure we are adhering to our school's purpose, and discussing changes, should any be needed, to continue to promote student success. It is evident from meetings' agendas and minutes how we ensure student success by continuously reviewing and revising our school's purpose. In addition, we make sure to post our purpose and mission on the school's website and in the main office. The school's motto, "Where Children and Learning Come First" is displayed on our school's t-shirt to ensure our purpose is known to all stakeholders.

1.3 The school leadership, faculty, staff, and parents at Stewart Street Elementary School (SSES) are committed to a culture that is based on shared values and teaching philosophies. The school maintains and communicates a purpose and direction that commits to high expectations and success for all students. Evidence of this is shown through parent- teacher communications, as well as, surveys taken from staff and parents. The Stewart Street Family is dedicated to the mission statement "Where Children and Learning Come First".

Students enrolled in PreK-5th grade Exceptional Student Education, Emotionally Behavioral Disorders, and Trained Emotionally Handicapped classes are constantly tested and reassessed. The continuous improvement process includes 8 steps that are on a continuous teaching/learning cycle. However, when the 8 steps are combined with effective teaching, committed teachers, and dedicated students, the results are powerful.

Knowing that the educational improvement process is not limited to only students, the staff regularly engages in professional development with school wide learning strategies, along with personal educational goals. In addition to the aforementioned, the school's physical environment and learning technologies are constantly assessed and improved as needed.
